Education
Born in San Juan, Puerto Rico in 1975, Mr. Jorge R. Roig Colón graduated from Harvard University where he obtained a Bachelor of the Arts (A.B.) with Honors in Economics (1997). While at Harvard University, his coursework included a concentration on Microeconomics, Finance, Game Theory, Derivative Pricing and Econometrics. He then obtained his Juris Doctor from the University of California at Berkeley School of Law, Boalt Hall (2000). He also received a “Boalt Hall Law & Technology Certificate” for his coursework in Copyrights and Trademarks, Cyberlaw, Entertainment Law, Sports Law and Art Law, and his thesis: “Speaking in Code: The Question of First Amendment Coverage of Computer Source Code.”
Professional Experience
Upon returning to Puerto Rico, Mr. Roig Colón served as Judicial Clerk to then Associate Justice, later Chief Justice, Federico Hernández Denton, at the Puerto Rico Supreme Court (2000-2001). He then served as Judicial Clerk for United States District Judge Salvador E. Casellas at the United States District Court for the District of Puerto Rico (2001-2003).
Mr. Roig Colón labored in private practice at Fiddler, González & Rodríguez, P.S.C. (2003-2005). He worked, among other things, in complex civil litigation involving intellectual property matters for important clients such as ASCAP, Direct TV, Telemundo and Merisant, regarding such megaprojects as the Superaqueduct (as attorney for Dick Corporation), and concerning other disputes for corporate clients such as Pep Boys, Inc., Nestlé, American Airlines, and RJ Reynolds, among others.
Mr. Roig Colón has also served as Assistant Secretary of Justice, in charge of the Office of Legal Counsel, the Legislative Liaison’s Office and the Contracts and Law No. 9 Division of the Puerto Rico Department of Justice (2005-2008). Mr. Roig Colón was, among other things, responsible for the negotiation and preparation of all contracts at the Puerto Rico Department of Justice, and advised the Governor, the Secretary of Justice and the different governmental entities of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico regarding legal, communications and public policy issues of high import including, but not limited to, constitutional law matters, such as First Amendment and privacy issues concerning private citizens, corporations and the press, internal procedures and rulemaking regarding personnel, budget and management, bond issues, due diligence and closings, interest rate swap transactions, executive appointments, budgetary law matters, and the Department of Justice’s headquarters relocation project. Mr. Roig Colón conducted high profile litigations involving constitutional issues related to government budget crises, intergovernmental disputes, and property rights.
Mr. Roig Colón served as Administrative Law Judge in the Puerto Rico Supreme Court’s Continuing Legal Education Program (2010-2011), and as a member of the Item-Writing Committee for the General and Notarial Law Bar Examinations of the Board of Bar Examiners (“Comité de Redactores de Preguntas para los Exámenes de Reválida General y Notarial de la Junta Examinadora de la Reválida para Aspirantes al Ejercicio de la Abogacía”) of the Puerto Rico Supreme Court (2005-2008).
He also served as Adjunct Professor at the University of Puerto Rico School of Law (2009-2011), where he administered a course on Legal Research and Writing, and Introduction to the Law. Mr. Roig Colón is now a tenured member of the Faculty at the Touro College Jacob D. Fuchsberg Law Center, in Long Island, New York. As Associate Professor of Law, he is teaching and developing his scholarly agenda primarily in the fields of Constitutional Law, Intellectual Property, and Internet and Technology Law.
Mr. Roig Colón also serves as Founding Member and Special Counsel for González, Machado & Roig, LLC, providing legal advice and consultation in the following practice areas: General Civil and Commercial Litigation and Consulting, including Banking, Antitrust, Contract and Bankruptcy Law; Legislative and Governmental Affairs; Constitutional and Administrative Law; Appellate Litigation; and Intellectual Property and Technology Law (including Trademark, Copyright, Art, Sports and Entertainment Law).
Mr. Roig Colón is admitted to practice law before the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico General Court of Justice, the District of Columbia Courts, the United States District Court for the District of Puerto Rico, the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit, and the United States Supreme Court.
